What You Can Do To Troubleshoot Your AC Issues Before Calling in the Experts

If your air conditioning is on the fritz, you want it fixed quickly. Before you get all hot under the collar, let us take a look at a few ways you can troubleshoot your AC problems before calling for a professional repair.

Here is a troubleshooting checklist of things that might be the cause of your air conditioning problem and how to fix it:

1. Dirty Filters

This is the most obvious and easiest issue to troubleshoot. A clogged filter will restrict airflow, forcing your AC system to work on overdrive to push air through.

Swap out your dirty filter before sounding the alarm, and there’s a good chance you will fix the issue in a matter of minutes.

2. Thermostat Malfunction

Your thermostat is the brains of your HVAC system’s operation and can malfunction just as easily as your air conditioner.

Check your programmable thermostat setting to ensure it is on the correct setting. A thermostat located in a sunny spot can also register the wrong temperature and put your AC cycle in a tailspin.

3. Outside AmBUSH

Your AC compressor needs space to work. Bushes, trees, and other landscaping can compromise airflow if they’re too close.

Trim the area around your compressor, giving it at least 2 to 3 feet of space to function properly.

4. Tripped Breakers

Summer storms and power surges are common and can easily knock out your air conditioner.

Flip the breaker to restore AC operation quickly.

5. Frozen Refrigerant Line

The largest pipe leading into your AC condenser is your refrigerant line.

If this is coated in ice, shut the system off, leave the fan on, and give it time to thaw. If it happens again, you might be low on refrigerant.

6. Dirty Condenser Coil

Debris like leaves or general dirt can get into your condenser and disrupt the airflow.

Remove any debris and use a hose to spray off the coils until the water runs clear.

7. Clogged Drain Line

Your AC unit removes condensation via a drain line. If that line gets clogged, it can affect the functioning of your AC.

Check to be sure the drain line is emptying properly and isn’t obstructed.

8. Undersized Unit

Your AC should help keep you cool during summer days, but sometimes, it just can’t get down to your desired temperature on the hottest days.

It’s important that your AC isn’t constantly running.

Bumping up your thermostat is a temporary fix for this issue. If your unit is undersized, you should consider an air conditioner replacement for long-term energy and repair savings.
